Cloud Security Is the #1 Cyber Hiring Gap of 2026

AWS and Azure security roles have the highest unfilled-to-applicant ratio in all of cyber. Here's why — and how to position yourself for them.

    The numbers

According to ISC2's 2025 workforce study, cloud security roles have the worst supply-demand imbalance in the entire cyber labor market. Average time-to-fill: 4.5 months. Average premium over comparable on-prem roles: 25–40%.

    Why the gap exists

Cloud moved faster than the workforce. Most security professionals built their careers in network-centric environments — firewalls, perimeters, on-prem AD. The cloud-native model (IAM-as-perimeter, ephemeral workloads, API-first everything) requires unlearning as much as learning.

The four pillars of cloud security competence

    1. Identity

IAM, conditional access, SCPs, permission boundaries, JIT access. If you understand IAM deeply, you're 60% of the way to a cloud security job.

    2. Data

KMS, envelope encryption, S3/Blob/GCS controls, secrets management, DLP.

    3. Network

VPC design, security groups vs. NACLs, private endpoints, egress filtering, service mesh.

    4. Detective controls

GuardDuty, Defender for Cloud, Security Command Center, CloudTrail, log analytics, CSPM tools (Wiz, Prisma, Orca).

    A learning sequence that works

    Month 1

AWS Solutions Architect Associate (yes, really — you need the architectural baseline before the security cert lands).

    Month 2

AWS Certified Security – Specialty *or* Microsoft SC-200/SC-100. Pick the cloud you'll actually work in.

    Month 3

Build something. Stand up a small environment, deliberately misconfigure it, run Prowler / ScoutSuite, fix the findings.

    Month 4

Pick a niche: container security, IaC scanning, identity governance, or detection engineering in cloud.

    The career payoff

Cloud security architects routinely clear $200K total comp at mid-market companies and $300K+ at FAANG. The path from SOC analyst → cloud security engineer → cloud security architect is one of the most reliable accelerators in the field.
